Zeb Ringle: “Fiziksel Görünüşün Yarın Yok Edilebilir”

Her modelin farklı bir hikayesi var. Fakat New York’lu model Zeb Ringle’ın başına gelen eşsiz bir deneyim. Çekingen kız arkadaşın peşinden stüdyoya giden ve bir anda kendini moda dünyasında bulan Zeb, başdöndürücü bir kariyere sahip. Steven Klein, Bruce Weber, Stewart Shining, Ellen von Unwerth ve Arnaldo Anaya-Lucca gibi dev fotoğrafçılarla çalışma imkanı bulan Zeb, sanatçı yönünü hiç kaybetmemişe benziyor. Every model has their own story. But New Yorker model Zeb Ringle’s sounds an outstanding experience. Zeb, who follows his shy girlfriend to the studio, finds himself in the world of modeling all of a sudden. And now he seems to have an outstanding career. He has worked with some of the giant photographers like Steven Klein, Bruce Weber, Stewart Shining, Ellen von Unwerth and Arnaldo Anaya-Lucca and he hasn’t lost his sense of art. He gives his first Turkish interview for vividstate, which sounds like nothing but a story of an arty fashionisto.

Kariyerin nasıl başladı? Hikayen nedir?

Kariyerim doğduğum yer olan Arizona’da başladı. Modelliğe yeni başlayan ve profesyonel fotoğraflar çektirmek isteyen bir kızla çıkıyordum. Ve yalnız gitmek istemiyordu. Onunla çekime gitmeyi kabul ettim. Fotoğrafçıyla tanıştığımda, kitabını tamamlayabilmesi için bana benzeyen erkeklere ihtiyacı olduğunu; çekimi kabul edersem kız arkadaşımın o gün ödeyeceği 800 Doları almayacağını söyledi. Kabul ettim ve çekimi yaptık. Sonra bir ajansa fotoğrafları göstermek için gittim. Beni temsil etmek istediklerini söylediler. Ve puf! Şimdi bir modelim!

How did your career actually begin? What’s your story?

My career started in Arizona where I was born. I was dating a girl who wanted to start modeling so she planned to have professional photos taken and didn’t want to meet the photographer alone. I agreed to go with her and when I met the photographer, he told me that he needed men with similar appearance to complete his book. He asked me to shoot with him and if I agreed he would not charge my girlfriend the $800 for her shoot that day. I agreed, so we shot and I later met with an agent to show them the pictures and I was told that they wanted rep me and poof! Now, I am a model!

Steven Klein gibi heyecan verici bir isimle çalıştın. Favorilerimden biri olduğu için merak ediyorum. Nasıl biri? “Anatomy of A Murder” nasıl bir deneyimdi?

Steven Klein, Bruce Weber, Stewart Shining, Ellen von Unwerth ve Arnaldo Anaya-Lucca gibi endüstrideki en iyi fotoğrafçılarla çalışma şansı yakaladım. Favori deneyimim Steven Klein ile çalışmaktı.  İlk ve tamamen önden çekimim olmasına rağmen,  sette kendimi hiç rahatsız ya da güvensiz hissetmedim. Chad White ile geliştirmiş olduğu hikayeyi gördüğümden beri onun hayranıyım. O çekimin sonuçlarını görmek ve onun vizyonunun bunu mümkün kılması, bende onunla çalışma arzusu doğurdu. İşin gerçeği, kapak hikayesi olmak hiç unutamayacağım türden bir deneyim. Çekimin bir gün sürmesi ve 10 sayfadan oluşması planlanmıştı. Fakat ilk çekim gününün sonunda Steven çekimi 40 sayfaya yaymak ve kitap haline getirmek istedi. Çekimin ikinci günü olan 15 Şubat, aynı zamanda benim doğum günümdü. 15 Şubat. Yani geçen seneki doğum günü hediyem, Steven Klein’ın çektiği Arena Homme Plus kapağıydı. Söylediğim gibi, o günü asla unutmayacağım!

You’ve worked with someone as amazing as Steven Klein. I’m wondering though… Since he is one of my favorite photographers of all time- What sort of person is he? Was “Anatomy of a Murder” an exciting experience for you?

I have had the opportunity to work with some of the best photographers in the business such as Steven Klein, Bruce Weber, Stewart Shining, Ellen von Unwerth and Arnaldo Anaya-Lucca. I have to say my favorite experience was working with Steven Klein. Even though it was my first and only full frontal shoot, I had never felt more comfortable or secure on a set.  I have been a fan of his ever since I saw the story he developed with Chad White. Seeing the result of that shoot and his vision that made it all possible was when I made it a personal goal to work with him. The fact that I got the cover was an experience I will never forget. The shoot was scheduled for one day to complete 10 pages, but after the first day of shooting Steven wanted to extend it to 40 pages and booked a second day on his own dime… It also so happened that the second day was my birthday, Feb 15th.  So, my birthday present last year was shooting the cover of Arena Homme Plus with Steven Klein. Like I said, I’ll never forget that day!

Bu endüstride öğrendiğin en büyük gerçek nedir? En büyük yalan ne?

Bu endüstriden öğrendiğim tek gerçek işlerin zaman alması. Jason’ın bugüne kadar bana söylemiş olduğu en ilham verici şeylerden biri “Roma bir günde inşa edilmedi” sözüydü. Bunda çok haklı, çünkü bir model olarak gelişmek zaman alan bir şeydir. Eğer bir teklif almazsan, bunu çok ciddi ya da kişisel olarak algılayamazsın. Yaptığım işi seviyorum, çünkü heyecanlı ve yeni bir şey yapmamı sağlıyor. İşlerle teker teker ilgilenmenin önemli olduğunu düşünüyorum.

What is the major fact that you’ve learnt from the industry? What is the biggest lie about it?

One fact that I learned from this business is it takes time. One of the most inspirational things Jason has ever said to me was, “Rome wasn’t built in a day”. He is so right, because it takes time to improve yourself as a model. You can’t take it too serious or personal if you don’t get a booking. I love what I do, because it allows me to do something new and exciting. It is important to take just one at a time.

İnsanlar seni nasıl tanıyor? Karakterinin baskın tarafı nedir?

İnsanlar beni nasıl mı tanır? Bazen modellik çok ciddiye alınabilir. Çocukluğumdan beri tiyatroyu her zaman sevmişimdir. Her zaman sınıfın palyaçosuydum, insanları güldürmek benim için her şeyden daha önemliydi. New York’a taşındığımda ilk önce ayaklarım yerden kesildi. Ayda ez an bir Broadway şovuna gitmeye çalışırdım. İnsanların hakkımda bilmesini istediğim tek şey, göz alıcı olmaktan daha fazlası olduğum gerçeğidir. İnsanların bir fotoğraftan daha fazlasını, hayatımı daha iyi tanımalarına izin vermek için, son zamanlarda birkaç proje üzerinde çalışıyorum. Ben bir sanatçıyım ve yaratmayı seviyorum! Her yerde mutlaka bir ilham buluyorum ve yaptığım işlerle etrafımdaki insanlara da ilham vermek istiyorum.

How do people know you as a person? What’s the most visible side of your personality?

How do people know me as a person? Well I feel like modeling can be so one serious sometimes. I have loved theater ever since I was a kid. I was always the class clown, focusing more on making people laugh than anything else. When I moved to NYC I jumped in feet first. I try and go to at least one Broadway show a month. I want people to know that I am more than just an eye candy. I have been working on a few projects these last couple months that will let people see more of my life than just a picture. I am an artist and I love to create! I find inspiration everywhere and I want to inspire others with my work.

Bir editorial çekim nasıl geçiyor? Bir modelin gözünden rutini biraz anlatır mısın?

Editorial çekimler harikadır fakat büyük paralar için sadece onları bel bağlamamalısın. Editorial’ın bir parçası olarak çalışmayı seviyorum. Çünkü fotoğrafçı kafasındaki hikayeyi yansıtmak için can atar, dolayısıyla bunun gerçekleşmesinden emin olmalıyım. Benim için hikayede bir karaktere bürünmek bir fırsattır. Zihnimde en çok yer eden çekim, Ellen von Unwerth ile olandı. Tamamen kadın kılığına girmiş olmam ve diğer üç transseksüel modelle birlikte kasapların bulunduğu bölgede dolaşmam gerekiyordu. Bu bana yeni bir kişi olma fırsatı verdi. Çekime hazır olmak için sete varmadan önce kendime bir arkaplan hikayesi kurguladım. Makyajım ve saçım yapılıyorken ikinci kişiliğime “Muffin” adını verdim ve bu oydu. Zeb gitmişti ve Muffin kabul etmediği sürece herhangi bir soruya cevap vermek zorunda değildim. Karakteri yaratırken değişmek önemlidir. Bahsettiğim hikaye Candy Magazine’in sonbahar sayısında yer alacak. Bunun için sabırsızlanıyorum. Bir kez bakan bir daha dönüp bakacak, bunu sana garanti edebilirim! (Gülüyor)

How does an editorial evolve and be one? What’s the routine of it in the eyes of a model?

Editorials are great but don’t rely on those for the big bucks. I love working as part of the editorial. Because the photographer strives to tell a story with the photos, therefore I have to make sure it comes to life. For me, it is an opportunity to become a character in the story. One of my most memorable shoots was with Ellen von Unwerth. I had to dress up in full drag and walk around in the meatpacking district with three other transgender models. It gave me the opportunity to become this whole new person. I gave myself a back-story to prepare before I got on set. I even gave my alter ego a name “Muffin” once I was in hair and makeup that was it. Zeb was gone and I refused to even answer to anything except Muffin. It is important to transform into the character. The story should be out in late fall for Candy Magazine. I can’t wait to get my hands on that editorial. It is going to turn some heads, I promise you that! (Laughs)

Takdir ettiğin birkaç model ismi verebilir misin?

Mark Vanderloo, Marcus Schenkenberg ve Alex Lundqvist. Uzun zamandır bu endüstride çalışıyorlar. Ve onlarla tanışma fırsatına sahip olduğumda bana karşı çok alçakgönüllü davrandılar ve ayakları yere basıyordu. Bu durum, bunun sadece bir iş olduğunu anlamamı sağladı ve aynı zamanda hepimizin kutsanmış olduğunu. Bu hiçbir zaman akıllardan çıkmamalı.

Can you give us a few names that you admire as a model?

Mark Vanderloo, Marcus Schenkenberg and Alex Lundqvist. These men have been working for a long time. And when I had the opportunity to meet them they were so humble and down to earth. They made me realize that it is just a job and that we are all blessed to be here. It should never be taken for granted.

Bu tür bir işle başa çıkmak kolay mı?

Bazen evet, bazense hayır. Rekabetçi biri olmadığımı ve gittiğim her teklifte işi almak istemediğimi söylesem, yalan olurdu. Öyleyim ve istiyorum, ama aynı zamanda gerçekçi olmalıyım. Eğer aynı sezonda bir iç çamaşırı kampanyasında yer almak için seçilmişsen, başka birinde yer alamazsın. Bazen bir iş teklifi alırsın ve kabul edersin. Çekim günü hayır diyemeyeceğin daha iyi bir teklif alırsın, fakat bir önceki anlaşmaya olan bağlılığın buna izin vermez. Ve tam o anda işin içine dürüstlük girer ve arkana yaslanıp tamamlaman gereken bir işe sahip olduğun için tatminkar davranırsın. Aynı zamanda gelecek sezon içerisinde bir kampanya çekiminde yer almayı umut edersin.

Do you find it easy to cope with such a job?

Sometimes yes and sometimes no. It would be a lie if I told you I wasn’t competitive and if I didn’t want to book every casting I go on. I am and I do, but I also need to be realistic. If you book one underwear campaign, you can’t book another in the same season. Sometimes you get an offer to do a job, so you accept it. And the day it is shot you get an offer for a better opportunity that you can’t take advantage of due to the previous commitment. That’s where your integrity kicks in and you just have to sit back and be thankful for the opportunity that you had to complete. And hope there will be a chance to do the other campaign the next season.

Aileni, arkadaşlarını sık görüyor musun?

Kız arkadaşım, annem, kız kardeşim ve iki yeğenim; tüm ailem Batı yakasında yaşıyor. Onları dilediğim kadar sık göremiyorum fakat bu işin bir parçası. Ayrıca Soul Artist Management’ta da harika bir ailem var. Ve şu anda endüstrideki en iyi modellerden bazıları bizimle beraber. Jason burada, New York’ta bir aile ortamından daha fazlasını hissettirdi, beklediğimden daha fazla. Sıklıkla arkadaş çevremizi bir araya getirir ve birbirimize yakın kalmamızı sağlar. Bize boşuna “Soul Askerleri” demiyorlar. En iyi “generale” sahip sıkı bir grubuz.

Do you often get to see your family, friends?

All of my family is on the west coast; my girlfriend, my mom, my sister, and my two nephews. I don’t get to see them as often as I would like but that’s part of the business. I also have a great family at Soul Artist Management and we have some of the best models in the game right now. Jason has made it feel like more of a family here in NYC than I have ever expected. He brings the guys together frequently and makes sure we all stay close. They don’t call us the “Soul Soldiers” for nothin. We are a tight group with the best “general” of all.

Türkiye’nin de artık uluslararası takvime dahil olmuş bir moda haftası var; Istanbul Fashion Week. Teklif gelse ne düşünürsün?

Türkiye’ye gitmeye bayılırdım. Bence moda dünyasının İstanbul’u uluslararası camiada tanınan sıcak bir moda noktası olarak görmesi fantastik bir durum. Moda geleceğinize dair çok heyecanlıyım! (Gülüyor) Limitimiz gökyüzü!

Turkey now has an internationally known fashion week, Istanbul Fashion Week, which is also included within the global calender. What would you say if you were offered to visit and work here in Istanbul?

I would love to go to Turkey. I think its fantastic how the modeling world is starting to look at Istanbul as a legitimate internationally known hot spot for fashion. I am excited for your fashion future! (Laughs) Sky is the limit!

Onlarca tasarımcı, onlarca fotoğraf sanatçısı. Herkesin dahiyane fikirleri var. Bu yoğun ve yaratıcı ortam seni nasıl etkiliyor?

Bu endüstri ile ilgili en iyi şey. Tüm bu harika sanatçılar ve tasarımcılar, o yeni, sıcak görünüm için yarışıyor ve yaptığı işi kusursuzlaştırmak için sınırları zorluyor. Ve bu sınır dünyanın giydikleri ve yaptıkları oluyor. Bunun içinde yer almanın ne kadar harika bir şey olduğunu anlatamam. Bu kendi başınıza keşfetmeniz gereken bir şey.

There are many designers, photographers and many people involved within the industry and each have their own sophisticated vision to share. How does this massive, creative platform affect you?

That’s the best thing about this industry. All of these brilliant artists and designers competing for that hot new look and pushing the envelope to perfect it. This is the cutting edge of what the world is wearing and doing. I can’t explain how great it is to be involved in it. It’s just something you have to experience for yourself.

“Mükemmellik” kelimesi bir model için ne anlama geliyor?

Bir model için “kusursuzluk” neyi mi ifade eder? Bu soru gerçekten zor… Kusursuzluk benim için çaba göstermem gereken bir şey, fakat aynı zamanda imkansızı istemek gibi bir şey.

What does “perfection” mean to a model?

What does “perfection” mean to model? This is a hard one… To me perfection is something to strive for but impossible to attain.

Estetik cerrahi ve tüm bu güzellik arayışı hakkında ne düşünüyorsun?

Estetik cerrahi beni korkutuyor! (Gülüyor) Bence bir günde Photoshop’a ayrılan zaman üzücü. Sanki yanlış bir imaj yaratılmış oluyor. Bana kalsa, fotoğraflarımın hiçbir şekilde bu yönde kullanılmasına izin vermezdim. Eğer fotoğraftaki kişiye gerçekten hiç benzemiyorsan, nasıl bir mankensindir ki? Gerçek güzellik içtedir. Fiziksel görünüşün yarın yok edilebilir. Ama bu aynadaki yansımanla ilgili değil, ruhunun yansımasıyla ilgilidir.

Plastic surgery and all this yearn for beauty… What do you make of it?

Plastic surgery scares me! (Laughs) I think its sad the amount of Photoshop that is used on a daily basis. I feel like its almost creating this false image. If it were up to me, I would never allow my photos to be Photoshopped. How are you a model when you don’t even really look like the photograph that was just taken of you. True beauty is on the inside. Your physical appearance can be destroyed tomorrow, but its not about the reflection in the mirror only the reflection of your soul.
